Short Description:

Assists in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients with pulmonary disorders. Collects and analyzes sputum, blood, and breath specimens to determine levels of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and other gases. Also measures the lung capacity of a patient to determine if there is impairment. Evaluates, treats, and cares for patients with breathing or other cardiopulmonary disorders. Practicing under the direction of a Physician, Respiratory Therapists assume primary responsibility for all respiratory care therapeutic treatments and diagnostic procedures, including the supervision of Respiratory Therapy Technicians. Provides temporary relief to patients with chronic asthma or emphysema and gives emergency care to patients who are victims of a heart attack, stroke, drowning, or shock.
